From Santa Fe Inspiration to Burnet Kindness
My journey with glassblowing took an unexpected turn in Santa Fe. While renting a studio to hone my skills, I stumbled upon an AA group on a Sunday morning. They were gathered, men and women alike, some glassblowers, some not, working together to create glass chips with inscriptions. These chips were meant for women in their recovery journey, a gesture of support that wasn’t officially recognized in New Mexico at the time.
Where Inspiration Took Me
Witnessing this collective effort to uplift others left a lasting impression. I returned to my hometown of Burnet, Texas, inspired. I started making “thankful” chips, small glass tokens to acknowledge acts of kindness in my students. The idea was to catch them doing something good, give them a chip, and encourage them to “pass it forward.”
The response was incredible. My students embraced the idea, and soon those chips were circulating throughout our little town, leaving a trail of smiles and good deeds in their wake.
Full Circle
One day, a year later, I received one of my own chips back. It came with a heartwarming story from an elderly woman whose door had been held open by one of my students. The woman insisted that I “pass it forward.” It was a powerful moment, a reminder of the ripple effect even the smallest act of kindness can have.
Today, my studio, Blown Glass Creations, offers a variety of glass chips with different words of encouragement. I’m dedicated to spreading positivity, one chip at a time, and inviting everyone to join me in creating a more compassionate world.
